Type 1 is tough, but our kids are tougher!
At the age of 5, my son was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes and it changed our lives forever. I’m not going to lie, it was hard, but we got stronger.
Our way of coping was to embrace the technology to help manage Type 1. However, we often struggled to keep these devices attached to the body. I hand made stickers, and drew fun designs onto these stickers, to secure the devices in place - sensor changes were upsetting enough without a device falling off! I knew the stickers made my son smile and changing his devices was less traumatic for him and me. It is amazing how much joy a little sticker can bring to a child and how distracting it can be when having a device changed.
As a Surface Pattern Designer, I have used my experience to create beautiful, fun designs, specifically for children. I have thought about what my children like, what colours they love, and words they enjoy as inspiration. My designs transform these medical devices from functional to fun accessories to be proud of.
