It's the question every CGM user asks within the first week: how long is this patch actually meant to last? The honest answer is "it depends" — but the variables are simpler than you'd think.
The short answer
A CGM overlay patch is designed to last as long as your sensor session. That means:
- Freestyle Libre 1, 2 and 3: up to 14 days
- Dexcom G6 and G7: 10 days
- Omnipod and Omnipod 5: 3 days per pod
- Medtronic Guardian and Enlite: 7 days
If your patch comes off before that, something in the application or in your daily routine is working against it. The good news is that it's almost always fixable.
What actually affects wear time
Skin prep
This is the single biggest factor. A patch applied to skin with moisturiser, sunscreen residue or sweat will start lifting within hours. Wash with plain soap, dry thoroughly, and wait a minute before applying. We cover the full routine in our patch care guide.
Where the sensor lives
Patches placed on the upper arm tend to outlast patches on the abdomen or thigh. Friction from waistbands, gym kit and seatbelts is what unsticks patches early, not the adhesive itself.
Water and sweat
Showers, baths and swimming are usually fine. We've written a separate guide on keeping your CGM on while swimming if water exposure is a big part of your routine. Hot tubs, saunas and very long pool sessions are where edges start to lift.
Climate
Heatwaves and humid summers shorten wear time for everyone. So does very cold weather if you go from frozen pavements into a heated indoor space repeatedly.
When to change your patch (not your sensor)
Sometimes the patch goes before the sensor does. That's normal. Replace the patch — not the sensor — if:
- The edges are lifting and catching on clothing
- It looks visibly grubby after a long stretch
- The design has worn off and you just want a fresh look
- The patch is fine but you fancy a different one for a special occasion
Plenty of users keep a small stash of designs and rotate them mid-sensor. A bundle works well for this.
Getting more out of each patch
A few habits that consistently extend wear time:
- Apply to clean, dry, hairless-ish skin. A quick wipe with an alcohol prep pad helps if your skin is naturally oily.
- Press for 30 seconds. Body heat activates the adhesive properly.
- Avoid the gym for the first hour after applying. Sweat and movement during the initial set means the bond never fully forms.
- Don't peel and reapply. Once you've lifted an edge, the patch won't seal again.
Choosing your next patch
